USS Holland 1978

It had to happen somone would find an old photograph wih yours truley smack bang in the middle!

Did you take part in this day trip?

The report reads .

Youngsters in this area grow up with ships and shipbuilding but few of them can get the chance for a close look at a floating dock. These 19 lucky boys and girls of the Knights of St Columba Youth council 350, of Greenock, got that chance recently when they were invited aboard the USS Holland by the US Navy.
They - and youth officer Sam McLees, far left - were shown round the dock, introduced to Commander Lindsay (centre), who is second in command on board and then were treated to a slap-up meal before returning home.

USS Holland was launched in 1963 and at the time of her visit she was under the command of Captain L. S. Wigley.
Arriving at the Holy Loch in 1975 it was begining of a seven year stay in Scotland.
She was decomissioned in 1996.

I am afraid all that I remember clearly about the day was the height of those sailors and the fact that I had mash potatoes for my dinner! One of the men had to lift my tray as I could not reach the serving hatch.....well I was only 7.
