Old Photographs

Submitted by Mr D Macfadyen

The Eclipse Cinema stood where the Plazza, or County bingo hall stands today. It was first opened in January 1914.
Work on the Plazza started in 1939 but was halted during the war years and the building was used as a workers canteen. It was finally finished and opened in 1951.

The oldest picture house in Port Glasgow was the "Port Glasgow Palace" any details about this cinema would be appreciated.
It stood roughly where the DHSS stands today on what is now Scarlow Street.

Mr Macfadyen was able to date this snap of the family owned grocers to roughly 1920/30. The address of the Store was 52 Bay Street Port Glasgow.

I am always happy to receive old photographs and try to make them look as good as I can for using on the site.

I would like to thank Mr Mcfadyen for taking the time to send these photographs.

The Monck 1940's

Pat thinks this photograph was taken in the 40's. The boys were standing "at the old Monck" and the building in the background is believed to be Sunnybank House. It is the best photograph of this old building I have yet to see!
He is unsure who the boys are and would love to put some names to them.

Port Glasgow High School

Roughly dated around 1954/56

This photograph was sent to me by Julieanne who was able to tell me that her Uncle John Gray (Johnny) who was from Castlehill Avenue is the person who is circled in the photograph.(centre of the shot)

She is hoping that you can add some more details to what she knows and name a few more faces! Please drop me a line if you can help and I will pass it on to Julieanne.

Here are a couple of very old postcard.about 1960 I think.

The postcard showing Bay Street seems to have been a popular picture as it shows up in a few publications about the town as well as the old postcards.

I came accross this photo taken in the Kingston yard about 1950
when I was 15. The chap on the machine was called Andy I don't know his surname.
The chap bending we called Lachie. I dont know the name of the chap sitting.
The name of the ship was Biscoe an oil tanker.
I managed to find some details of the build and a photograph on the excellent Clydebuilt website.
