The West Church in Brown Street built in 1885. Designed by John Burnet in what was referd to as an "arts and Crafts style"

This is all the information that I have on this building at the moment.
I beleive that it avoided the "housing fate" a little longer than most because it was used by a local company for the storage of furniture and carpets.

The redevelopment was only finished in 2000 and the flats are now all occupied.

Jean Street School

Jean Street School (1883-84)
Designed by H&D Barclay it was one of the many school buildings built over the final quarter of the last century. It uses pilastrades to unify and centralize the elevations original building accommodated 716 pupils and was built to replace Princes Street, Bouverie Terrace and Beaton Schools
In 1889 it had a further floor added to accommodate for secondary education.
In 1885 the total number of children attendance was recorded at 728. In 1975 this had dropped to only 221.
The school closed in 1978 and the pupils were moved to the Highholm building.

The school lay empty for many years before being refurbished and turned into flats.
The flats now have private parking within the old playground and a security entrance at the main door. (I bet many a wean had wished it was as hard to get into in their day!)
It is now known as School Court.

Converted Buildings

Glenpark House

Arts Guild started in the house in 1969

Occupied by Anderson Rodger the shipbuilder between the years of 1882-1912

Although I have been aware that this building was in the process of being converted for a while I had difficulty in finding any decent information on it's past. These details are rather scant so if you can add anything please get in touch.

More recently the building was used for the Births/deaths/marriages office for the town and at this time it was also used for antenatal care among other things.The opening of the building for this purpose taking place on 25 May 1956.

The building was also used for a long time as a private nursing home. I understand that this was run by Mr&Mrs Crighton who built a small house to the rear of the property within what was the gardens.
After entering the front door you were in a small reception hall then into the house proper.
Like most of these buildings it had a central stair with heavy wooden rails. The building also had a stained glass window in one of the first floor rooms.
The rounded end to the building you can see in the photograph contained the "dorm" style rooms for the elderly residents.

Glenpark House is an A listed Building.

At January 2002 only the main part of the building nears completion. All the flats have now been sold! This drawing shows what the final conversion should look like after the completion of the new buildings surrounding the old house.

Also up at the area of Glenpark house was another house Elmworth. It was roughly placed at the top of what is now Mary Street and was the home of the one time Provost Alexander Gray.He was provost from 1892-1895. This family also had connections to the Newark Sailcloth company which was better known locally as The Glen Mill. The house was knocked down in 1960 to make way for new developments.

The only sign of it's existence is the bricked up entrance to the drive and the sign post for the actual house.
