The Sport Of Boxing. We still have gym in Port Glasgow today and by all accounts it is well used. While looking into the towns past I discovered that the their is nothing new about Port Glasgow and its links to the sport. Two young men who lived only streets away from each other in Port Glasgow had one important thing in common, both were contenders for the world fly-weight title and were in the top ten ratings of the 'Ring ' magazine, edited by Nat Fleischer in New York City. Alec Murphy and Hugh Cameron had climbed the ladder and were in much demand by promoters. Future world champion Terry Allen from Islington had rung up an impressive thirty two fights without defeat when he met Murphy at Harringay Arena in London in 1946.
The twenty four year old upset the bookies by when he knocked out Allen in six rounds and Port Glasgow looked forward to a new champion. This page last modified on Wednesday, May 21, 2003
