Redevelopment 2005 - 2007
The site of the old Boglestone Primary School is cleared ready for the building of the new school in the pictures shown above. This school will take pupils from all over Port Glasgow.
The name of the new school will be Newark Primary. Pupils from the old school are currently using the Slaemuir school during the re-build.
St Michael's primary school was completely refurbished and the children and now back in the building.
A look at a few of the redevelopments that are taking place in the town. All pictures taken July 2005 for the site. At the bottom of the Clune Brae and after a long wrangle over planning permission for a retail unit on the Newark Street site this picture shows work continues on the Lidl store just behind the Gourock Rope Works building.
The old petrol station on the Clune Brae has now been turned in to a Chinese fast food outlet.
After standing idle for many years the Gourock Rope Works building has finally started to see it's conversion into residential flats. The plans for the main building and surrounded land are 35 loft apartments, 24 luxury apartments on the east side and a further 58 on the west side of the building.
The town centre has also seen some modernisation completed on John Wood Street with the retail units being modernised and now ready for new owners.
The redevelopment of the land which used to hold so many shipyards is now well underway. The pictures show the work on the new road layout (image 3&5) and the land being cleared which includes the demolition of the old Lithgows building.(image 4) The new development will contain shops, housing and a hotel as well as a petrol station and a civic square. For photographs before and during the demolition of Bogelstone School please see this page.My thanks to Jean for sharing the demolition pictures.
